VERDEN, Germany, Aug. 6–Denmark’s Andreas Helgstrand is off to a perfect start toward the goal of winning consecutive Young Horse World Championship titles. On the breathtaking mare Uno Donna Unique (Don Schufro – Falkland) he scored 9.46, well ahead of the 9.12 scored by Eva Möller (Germany) and Soliere (Sandro Hit – Donnerhall) in second place. Uno Donna Unique, who was reserve champion 5 year-old in 2009, scored 10 for her trot. This was the only 10 given out Friday. Andreas was anticipated to dominate with his other ride, Honnerups Driver (Romanov Blue Hors – Don Schufro), with whom he won the 5 year-old championship in 2009. Significant tension dropped Honnerups Drivers walk score to 6.8 and a final score of 8.56 and fifth place.

Over the past year, Uno Donna Unique seems to have developed more in her body and way of moving than her stablemate. Her trot was cadenced, relaxed and beautiful in the contact. The walk very large, swinging, relaxed and correct, 9.5 and the canter uphill with lovely jump. The second flying change was not so easy and this likely affected the canter score, 9.0. The whole test was a pleasure to watch.

Eva Möller and Soliere, owned by Natascha van Dyk were last to go. The diminutive Möller presented Soliere to his best advantage, with only a small mistake in the second flying change. The trot was again cadenced with very expressive half passes and good reach in the extensions, 9.4. The walk relaxed and correct, 8.9 and the canter 9.0. It is possible the judges got a little over-enthused with this partnership, but they are certainly one to watch in the finals.

In 2009, Honnerups Driver scored the magic “10” for his trot. This year, although super in the rhythm,  the collected trot was maybe too close to passage. Incredible reach in the half pass and clear medium and extended trots allowed a trot score of 9.4. The canter was the best of the day, 9.8, with incredible jump and an overall feeling of lightness. The tension apparent in the walk, and a few too many small mistakes throughout the test also lowered the score for submission to an 8.0. There is no question of the quality and talent of this horse. It is without question that he has a huge future beyond the Young Horse classes.

The biggest surprise of the day and, in my opinion, one of the most delightful rides was third place-getter Anna Svanberg and the mare Deja 5 (Silvano – Don Schufro) of Sweden. Anna was completely surprised by her overall score of 8.84, the highest she has scored with the mare. Deja 5 was a 4yo champion in Sweden and was then given a year off, literally turned out in the field, to continue developing. Even now she is hacked out every other day and was shown very lightly leading into these championships.

The softness of the connection with the bit was beautiful, the best of the day and something the owner and breeder, Marie Haward, loves about Anna’s riding. As her scores came in, 8.9 for the soft, elegant and cadenced trot, 8.7 for the walk and 8.9 for the canter of tremendous quality, Anna had a look of combined joy and disbelief. After unexpectedly taking the lead from the favorite, Honnerups Driver, all of Deja 5’s connection were in smiles and tears!

Absolute last word has to be about the fabulous media center at Verden. I mentioned the beer yesterday, but today they have fed us better than I generally feed myself. I walked back in at 7.55pm, following the prize giving of the small final for the 5 year-olds, and there are HOT bratwurst, and pumpernickel. This follows from the cold-cut sandwiches available all day and some divine and light concoction of apples, pastry and almonds. If this keeps up for the entire show it will be shopping on Sunday… for new britches!!
