AACHEN, Germany, July 14–Isabell Werth rode Warum Nicht FRH to a convincing victory in the Grand Prix CDI at the World Equestrian Festival CHIO Wednesday night, after a violent storm interrupted competition for two hours.
The victory was the second straight win by Isabell and her 2007 World Cup champion mount, coming six months after returning to competition from a long layoff during which he gave birth to her first child, a son. The pair won the Exquis World Dressage Masters Grand Prix and Freestyle at Cannes, France a month ago.
Isabell and the 14-year-old gelding scored 75.623 per cent to lead an all-German top three finish with Monica Theodorescu on Whisper second on 70.243 per cent and Matthias Alexander Rath on Triviant UNICEF third with 69.6966 per cent.
The CDIO Nations Cup Grand Prix is held Thursday and features Edward Gal and Moorlands Totilas and Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival, Isabell and her 2008 Olympic gold medal mount Satchmo, Great Britain’s Laura Bechtolsheimer on Mistral Hojris, Americans Tina Konyot and Calecto V, a Canadian team and other top riders from as far away as Australia.
The Aachen CHIO this year is, for many nations, the last major international competitions before their national teams are selected for the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky beginning Sept. 25.
