ROTTERDAM, The Netherlands, June 19–Moorlands Totilas was ridden by Edward Gal to the highest score this year–above 90 per cent–when the world’s dominant dressage duo won the Rotterdam CDIO Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday night, with his Dutch team mates filling the runnerup and third places.

Heavy rain during the ride by Edward and the 10-year-old black stallion that has won fans from all walks of life around the world did not appear to affect the pair as they scored 90.143 per cent.

On his Internet site, Edward said that Totilas performed a “breathtaking” ride that was their “best kür ever.”

It was below their world record mark of 92.30 per cent set in December, 2009, but more than six percentage points ahead of Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival–they got excited by the rain on the billboards around the arena–on 83.929 per cent and Imke Schellekens-Bartels on Hunter Douglas Sunrise in third place on 81.250 per cent. Hans Peter Minderhoud on Exquis Nadine, making their bid for the Dutch team that appears headed for gold at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky in September, filled sixth place on 76.893 per cent.

In what was one of the most intensely competitive events on the dressage calendar so far this year, Germany’s Christoph Koschel on Donnperignon, rapidly maturing at the top level, placed fourth on 78.00 per cent while the young star Matthias Alexander Rath on Sterntaler UNICEF was fifth on 77.393 per cent.

Three-time Olympian Ashley Holzer on Pop Art placed seventh on 75.571 per cent while Canadian team mate Belinda Trussell on Anton were 11th on 72.536 per cent.

The German veterans Hubertus Schmidt on Donnelly 3 and Monica Theodorescu on Whisper finish eighth on 75.392 per cent and ninth on 74.107 per cent, respectively.

The Swedes Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven on Favourit placed 10th on 73.392 per cent and Patrik Kittel, on his backup Kohlpharmas Florett AS, were scored at 71.964 per cent to place 12th.
