LINGEN, Germany, June 6–Great Britain’s Laura Bechtolsheimer on Mistral Hojris added the Grand Prix Special to her double Grand Prix victories at the International Dressage Festival CDI4* on Sunday with a score that came close to their European Championships best.
The 25-year-old won both Grand Prix, on her Olympic and European Championship mount Mistral Hojris in qualifying for the Grand Prix Special and on Andretti H in the Grand Prix qualifier for the Kür.
In Sunday’s Special, Laura and the 15-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding received a score of 79.458 per cent, including a 10 for passage. Germany’s Isabell Werth on her Olympic team gold medal mount Satchmo was second with 77.208 per cent and fellow German Christoph Koschel on Donnperignon third on 75.500 per cent, their highest score to date.
“Mistral Hoijris conveyed a good feeling,” she said, and will be working to improve the one-tempi changes in preparation for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Kentucky starting Sept. 25.
Isabell said of her result, coming a little over four months since returning to competition after the birth of her son, “We’re slowly moving back into familiar realms. Wiesbaden was already a step forward in Lingen, it was even two steps.”
Laura’s score was her second best ever in the Special on Mistral Hojris, surpassed only by their mark of 80.083 per cent to win bronze in the 2009 European Championships at Windsor, England.
After Laura’s placing atop the leaderboard Sunday, the next six placings were filled by German combinations, similar to the order in the Grand Prix.
Canada’s Belinda Trussell and Anton finished eighth in the Special with a score of 70.417 per cent. The pair were awarded 68.894 per cent in the Grand Prix, and were the only one of four Canadian combinations to qualify for the Special of 12 competitors.
In the Grand Prix for the Kür on Friday, Laura and the 15-year-old Hanoverian gelding Andretti H received a score of 71.660 per cent with Germany’s Ellen Schulten-Baumer on Donatha S second on 70.681 per cent and fellow German Helen Langehanenberg and Responsible OLD third with 70.551 per cent.
