LEXINGTON, Kentucky, Apr. 22-Tina Konyot and the stallion Calecto V were awarded their highest ever score in the Grand Prix Freestyle at the Kentucky Cup CDI3* World Equestrian Games test event Thursday night, as they plan to go to Europe on their path to the world championships in this same stadium later this year.

Riding only their third freestyle together, the pair posted a score of 76.250 per cent with Canadians Chris von Martels and the mare, Naomi, second on 70.200 per cent and 2008 Olympian Jacqueline Brooks and Balmoral with 67.350 per cent for third.

The riders variously described the new main stadium that will be used for WEG Sept. 25 to Oct. 10 as “spectacular” and “electric,” designed in such a way that it feels spacious but “intimate.” The crowd of 2,234 paid spectators enthusiastically applauded the seven rides as Todd Flettrich and Otto of the U.S. and Belinda Trussell and Anton of Canada scratched.

“I’m very happy with how he performed and executed the movements,” said Tina who splits her time between North Stonington, Connecticut and Palm City, Florida. And the day had good news on two fronts. Lady Shakespeare, a horse trained by her boyfriend, Roger Attfield, won the Bewitched Stakes at nearby Keeneland race course and he was at the Kentucky Horse Park to watch Tina win the freestyle.

She said that she was looking for consistency with the 12-year-old Danish Warmblood by Come Back II.

“I’m looking for perfection, but it probably will never happen, but we’ll keep trying.”

At the same time, though, she referred to her “tremendous setback” when she fell down the stairs of her home in Connecticut in December, 2008, and shattered her ankle that put her back six months.

“I’m grateful to be here,” she said, “but it is still a work in progress.”

She has received a grant to go to Europe with Calecto this summer and hopes to compete at Fritzens-Schindlhof in Austria in June and the World Equestrian Festival Aachen, Germany in mid-July.

Chris von Martels who has been riding Naomi, a 15-year-old Dutch warmblood, for only two months said he “had big shoes to fill” as the mare had previously been ridden by experienced competitors. The horse was bought by Sonia Zugel, one of his clients, to attempt to make Canada’s WEG team and then she will take over the ride.
