‘s-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands, Mar. 25–Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival convincingly beat Edward Gal and Moorlands Totilas in the Grand Prix of the World Cup Final Thursday, when nervous tension played the biggest role in the competition.

With both combinations riding in their first ever World Cup Final, Adelinde and the 13-year-old KWPN chestnut gelding scored 78.851 per cent while Edward and Totilas received marks of 76.808 per cent.

Imke Schellekens-Bartels and Hunter Douglas Sunrise scored 74.893 per cent to give The Netherlands the top three places in the Grand Prix.

The World Cup Final Grand Prix Musical Freestyle which will determine a new champion starts at 2 pm CET (9 am US ET) on Saturday and can be seen live on the Internet at www.feitv.org.

The times (local/US ET) of the final five riders on Saturday are:

4:00 pm/11:00 am  Adelinde Cornelissen – Jerich Parzival
4:10 pm/11:10 am Isabell Werth – Warum Nicht
4:20/11:20 am Imke Schellekens-Bartels – Hunter Douglas Sunrise
4:30/11:30 am Partik Kittel – Watermill Scandic HBC
4:40/11:40 am Edward Gal – Moorlands Totilas

In Thursday’s Grand Prix, it was Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven and the light-footed Favourit who held the lead at the halfway stage, but her score of 69.23 per cent was quickly bettered by Germany’s Matthias Alexander Rath and Triviant to move the target score above 70 per cent. Denmark’s Nathalie zu Sayn Wittgenstein with Digby then raised the standard further when earning 71.19 per cent on good passage, piaffe, canter zig-zag and square halt. The Danish Princess, who is competing at her final event as she is expecting her first baby in July, was glowing with satisfaction as she left the arena.

Germany’s Isabell Werth steered the 14-year-old Warum Nicht to 73.277 per cent to raise the bar higher.

Imke Schellekens-Bartel’s mare, Hunter Douglas Sunriuse, however, was in the form of her life as she danced her way to a score of 74.89 per cent in a test that was pleasing to the eye and full of grace and elegance.

Edward Gal and Moorlands Totilas did not sparkle in their usual way, the weight of expectation perhaps feeling very heavy after their record-breaking run over the past 12 months.  They came to s’Hertogenbosch in the knowledge that every time they go into the arena they are expected to produce even more magic than the time before. On Thursday night, Edward appeared to have a battle on his hands as the stallion exploded into canter and never fully settled. In passage and piaffe, Totilas again showed near perfection.

The ride of Sweden’s Patrik Kittel and Watermill Scandic flowed well for a mark of 72.08 per cent, but this was only good enough to secure fifth place.

Adelinde was last to go with the sometimes “ring shy” chestnut gelding that she is showing in her first championship since her former partner was bought out and thus giving her total control of Parzival.

She held him together and his confidence seemed to grow as his huge movement, excellent piaffe and lovely active half-passes clocked up good marks.

“Her horse was a little tense, but Adelinde had him on the bit to avoid mistakes and she managed very well.  It was a great result,” said dressage judge Wim Ernes.

Adelinde qualified at the top of West European League for the 2009 World Cup Final in Las Vegas, but Parzival became lame the day before the Final competition started. In Las Vegas in 2005, Edward rode the stallion Lingh to win the Grand Prix over his then trainer, Anky van Grunsven, and finished second overall.

For Edward and the 10-year-old black stallion, it was by far the lowest mark the pair have scored since their first international Grand Prix in mid-2009 and well below their world record of 84.085 per cent posted in the European Championships last August. But it was also at those championships in Windsor, England, that Adelinde and Parzival beat Edward and Totilas for the first time–and the only pair to do so at this level–creating their own world record score in the Grand Prix Special.

Four of the five judges put Edward and Totilas in second place with scores ranging from 76.170 per cent to 78.510 per cent. The USA’s Gary Rockwell scored the ride 74.680 per cent and third, placing them behind Imke and Sunrise.

Earlier, Matthias Alexander Rath on Sterntaler-UNICEF won the Grand Prix for the Special qualifier with a score of 73.659 per cent. Isabell Werth on her Olympic mount, Satchmo, was second on 72.723 per cent with Edward Gal on Sisther de Jeu third on 71.957 per cent.

Mathhias’s win on Sterntaler was the second big victory in five days, having won the Grand Prix Special at Dortmund Sunday over Isabell and Satchmo and Anky and Salinero.

The Special had been heavily promoted as it enabled nine-time World Cup champion and hometown hero Anky van Grunsven to compete here on Salinero, on whom she won individual Olympic gold in 2008, but who did not qualify for the World Cup Final.

The pair finished fifth Thursday with 70.510 per cent.

“Salinero surprised me completely today,” Anky said. “After Dortmund I did not expect him to be so hot as he was today. I even thought that Indoor Brabant was a bit too much directly after Dortmund but Salinero proved to be very fit. This actually caused problems and we made too many mistakes. Salinero wasn’t concentrated on me.”
