LEXINGTON, Kentucky, Dec. 11–Steffen Peters and Ravel, reigning World Cup champions and the only American combination ever to sweep the CDIO at Aachen, Germany, have been named as candidates for Equestrian of the Year and Horse of the Year. Voting by USEF members closes on Friday, Jan. 8.

Steffen Peters of San Diego, California, became the first American to win the World Cup on American soil, scoring 84.95 per cent in the Grand Prix Freestyle at Las Vegas in April.

The U.S. Equestrian Federation announced seven candidates for the award known as USEF Equestrians of Honor.

USEF members can vote for their chosen Equestrian of the Year candidate by visiting http://www.usef.org/_IFrames/eoty/Eoty.aspx. The winner is determined by the online vote, equestrian media and the USEF Board of Directors.

Ravel, an 11-year-old Dutch warmblood gelding owned by Akiko Yamazaki and Jerry Yang, was one of five horses nominated for Farnam/Platform Horse of the Year.

USEF members vote for their chosen Horse of the Year by visiting http://www.usef.org/_IFrames/hoty/hoty.aspx.

Voting in both polls ends at midnight US ET on Jan. 8.

The awards will be presented at the USEF annual meeting in Lousiville, Kentucky, in mid-January.

In addition to Peters, candidates for Equestrian of Honor are: Suzy Stafford (Combined Driving) of Bear, Delaware; Dr. Alan R. Raun (Saddlebreds/Hackneys) of Cumming, Iowa; John French (Hunter) of San Juan Bautista, California, Vicky Humphrey (Arabian/NSH) of Canton, Georgia; Tommy Garland (Arabian/Western) of Powhatan, Virginia and Kenny Wheeler (Hunter Breeding) of Keswick, Virginia.

Horse of the Year candidates in addition to Ravel, are: Sapphire, 14-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare owned by McLain Ward and Bluechip Bloodstock; Courage to Lead, 12-year-old bay Morgan mare owned by Beverley Lesher; Kripton-Seni II, nine-year-old bay Andalusian stallion owned by Joe and Nancy Latta, and CH Our Charming Lady, eight-year-old bay American Saddlebred mare owned by Jack and Donna Finch.

Ravel was named 2009 U.S. Dressage Federation Horse of the Year.
