LYON, France, Oct. 29–Returning to top form, Anky van Grunsven and Salinero on Thursday won the Grand Prix at the Equitá World Cup Horse Show, the second leg in the nine-event West European League series.
The pair that won the inaugural qualifier at Odense, Denmark, scored 77.021 per cent with Germany’s Monica Theodorescu on her Olympic mount Whisper placing second on 72.085 per cent with Great Britain’s European Championships superstar Laura Bechtolsheimer on Andretti H placing third on 69.702 per cent.
Edward Gal and Sisther de Jeu, who finished second to Anky and Salinero in Odense, was forced to withdraw when the 10-year-old Gribaldi mare bit herself in the mouth as they were about to enter the arena. As it was not possible to treat the injury in time, Sisther de Jeu was witdrawn.
Anky said that at the age of 15, ”Salinero is getting old and he tends to lose his concentration.
“Nevertheless, she said, “today he was focused on his work. One or two times I felt he was close to be cheeky, but fortunately he stayed concentrated.
“He improved his piaffe, passage and pirouette, which makes me quite happy. We exercised on that at home.”
Although Gal is now out of freestyle competition scheduled for Friday night, Anky said: ”When I am riding in the arena I do not consider competitors. My logic is to ride the best I possibly I can and not to say that I run against somebody else.”
She said the Lyon competition is “such a high quality international dressage competition–one of the best on the circuit–I regret there are not many more riders.”
Ten entries were received for the competition–three from The Netherlands, two from Great Britain, and one each from Denmark, Germany, Portugal, Switzerland, and the United States.
