OTTAWA, Oct. 26—Junior rider Maura O’Sullivan of Toronto on Monday was named the Dressage Canada Red Scarf Equestrian Athlete of the Month for September.

O’Sullivan, 17, was a member of the Ontario Junior Dressage gold medal winning team at the 2009 Adequan FEI North American Junior & Young Riders’ Championships, held July 21-26 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

Riding Terrence O’Sullivan’s 13-year-old Hanoverian gelding, Pik Czar, O’Sullivan and fellow team members Zachary Ball of Mountain, Alexandra Dvorak of Hillsburgh, and Megan Lane of Collingwood, scored a Team total score of 196.433, almost six points ahead of the silver medal-winning team from USA Region 3. O’Sullivan’s score of 65.568 per cent was the third highest in the Junior Team test.

“I was really pleased with our results at the Championships — our third in the Team test and Team gold medal,” said O’Sullivan, who had just competed in her first CDI competition three weeks earlier in Blainville. “I would like to thank Red Scarf Equestrian for sponsoring the Dressage Canada Athlete of the Month. It is great to have backing from our sponsors to raise awareness and athlete profiles in our sport.”

Dressage Canada Red Scarf Equestrian Athlete of the Month recognizes the achievements of dressage riders who represent Canada in national and international competition at the FEI Pony, Children, Junior, Young Rider, Advanced, Grand Prix and Young Horses classes.
