ODENSE, Denmark, Oct. 17–Anky van Grunsven and Salinero, the dominant partnership in World Cup competition in the 21st century, on Saturday claimed victory in the inaugural event of the 2009/2010 FEI World Cup West European League.
The Dutch pair scored 73.702 per cent to capture the Grand Prix at the JBK Horse Shows that is the first of the nine qualifying competitions leading to the Final in Holland next March. The Grand Prix Musical Freestyle will be held Sunday.
With two individual Olympic gold medals and four World Cup titles to their credit since 2004, Anky and Salinero were more than two percentage points ahead of compatriot Edward Gal and Sisther de Jeu who finished with 71.659 per cent while Germany’s Monica Theodorescu and Whisper were third on 71.404 per cent. They were the only three combinations to score above 70 per cent.
Anky said that despite her victory, “I had too many faults today because the horse lost its concentration. We had a good beginning, but during the extended trot he lost his focus and then we made more mistakes. Salinero needs two competitions before he is fully concentrated.”
Edward, the reigning European Champion on Moorlands Totilas, said that this was the first World Cup event for Sisther de Jeu.
“This is my first World Cup on that horse, and she was much more relaxed than yesterday,” he said.
