HANSBEKE, Belgium, Aug. 16–Anky van Grunsven rode IPS Painted Black in their first competition since an injury to the stallion earlier this year, and a record score for the partnership in the Grand Prix left no doubt they were back at their best at CDI Hansbeke.
In the Grand Prix Friday, their record score for their partnership was 76.340 per cent, more than four percentage points ahead of Sweden’s Patrik Kittel and Scandic in second place with 72.043 per cent and Marlies van Baalen and O’Jay of The Netherlands third on 69.108 per cent.
“A super comeback,” she declared. “I am so completely happy with him.”
Anky and the 12-year-old Gribaldi Dutch warmblood scored 75.167 per cent to win the Grand Prix Special on Saturday, the only combination to score above 70 per cent.
Kittel and Scandic were second on 69.875 per cent with Spain’s Juan Manuel Munoz on Fuego third on 69.458 per cent.
Anky said that Painted was on a score of 80 per cent in the Special until the zigzags when he stumbled for a step before recovering.
“That, of course, cost us a lot of points,” she said.
“But just like he showed in the Grand Prix, he has healed fine.”
