VERDEN, Germany, Aug. 6–Fürst Romancier ridden by Dr. Ulf Möller of Germany won the opening five-year-old class at the  FEI World Breeding Championships at Verden Thursday.

The dark bay stallion by Fürst Heinrich out of a Romancier mare and owned by Performance Sales International scored 8.76 with Blickpunkt by Belissimo/Weltmeyer and ridden by Eva Möller, the wife of Dr. Möller, in second place on 8.48. Denmark’s Skovens Rafael a stallion by Romanov Blue Hors out of a dam by Don Schufro and ridden by Lotta Skaebaek was third on 8.44.

Participants from 27 nations are competing at the Verden event in dressage and jumping that attracted aabout 5,000 spectators on the first day of the international competition.

The young horse championships are the centerpiece of the show.

This year, 61 dressage horses were nominated for the six-year-old championships. and 59 horses for the five-year-old championships.

Verden also hosts the renowned Nürnberger Burg-pokal for seven- to nine-year-old dressage horses that is among the most prestigious series in Germany.
