HEROLDSBERG, Germany, Aug. 2–Ulla Salzgeber and Wakana, her nine-year-old Thuringian mare, topped the final qualification for the Media Cup, the German national Grand Prix series for up-and-coming, eight- to 10-year-old horses.
The pair posted a score of 71.200 per cent in the fourth and final qualifier at the Dressage Gala for the closely watched championships scheduled for Münster Aug. 20-23.
Other qualifiers were Peter Borggreve and Laureus at 66.750 and Hans-Peter Bauer and Filmstar on 66.650 per cent.
Qualifying combinations from the three previous events in the series were: Isabell Werth and El Santo NRW, Hubertus Schmidt and Donnelly 3, Ingrid Klimke and Damon Hill NRW, Patrik Kittel and Tellwell 2, Anja Plönzke and Le Mont d’Or, Katrin Bettenwworth and Django Edwards, Carola Koppelmann and Rom 12, Anabel Balkenhol and Dablino and Marion Engelen and Diego 209.
Salzgeber’s top horse, Herzruf’s Erbe, went lame while entering the arena at Aachen, Germany a month ago. Ulla reports that her veterinarian says that the horse should be able to begin stamina training in about a month.
At Heroldsberg the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Freestyle was won by Plönzke and Le Mont d’Or with Ludwig Zierer on Weltino second and Heiker Kemmer and Royal Rubin third. Plönzke and Le Mont d’Or also won the Grand Prix Special with Hans-Peter Bauer and Wambo B second and Christine Eglinski and Cosmopolitan CC third.
