DE STEEG, The Netherlands, June 7–Edward Gal rode Moorlands Totilas to a close to perfect musical freestyle and the The Netherlands national championship. Their presentation upstaged nine-time World Cup champion Anky van Grunsven and IPS Salinero returning from a long rest after the 2008 Olympics where they won individual gold.
Gal and Totilas won the freestyle with a score of 86.700 per cent to beat van Grunsven and Salinero at 84.000 per cent and Imke Schellekens-Bartels on Hunter Douglas Sunrise on 80.850 per cent.
While the performances were outstanding and showed the depth of dressage in Holland, the national championships were not an international competition with the pressure of riding head to head with the top combinations from the rest of the world.
However, the results for Gal put him back in the spotlight more than he has been since his triumph on Lingh over van Grunsven in the Grand Prix at the World Cup Final in Las Vegas in 2005.
Gal and Totilas, owned by Moorland Stables that is a major sponsor of the Exquis World Dressage Masters, have been closely watched since their successes on the small tour at Aachen, Germany, just a year ago.
Their presence at Aachen later this month and at the European championships at Windsor, England at the end of August will be eagerly awaited.
