AACHEN, Germany, June 29–Caroline Roffman and Sagacious HF performed their first Grand Prix musical freestyle that wowed the crowd as well-ridden and ambitious with a high degree of difficulty to take second place in the Under-25 Division at the World Equestrian Festival Saturday.
The pair rode to music that was well suited for the first appearance by an American combination in the Under-25 division that is unofficially regarded as the equivalent of the world championship at the level that was won by Nanna Skodborg Merrald of Denmark on Millibar with a score of 78.475 per cent.
Caroline and the 14-year-old KWPN gelding were awarded 76.275 per cent from the five-judge panel, the same placing as the Grand Prix that was their debut at the world’s foremost horse show which hosts Nations Cups in dressage, jumping, eventing, driving and vaulting in the same week.
Diederik van Silfhout of the Netherlands and Ariando were third on 73.950 per cent.
Before this competition, the American combination had competed in only two previous Under-25 CDIs, both in her hometown of Wellington, Florida during last winter’s Global Dressage Festival.
The choreography and compilation of the music for the Freestyle was created by Marlene Whitaker of Raleigh, North Carolina four years ago when Sagacious was ridden by Lauren Sammis who had won team gold and individual silver on the horse at small tour at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Al Guden of Hyperion Farm, the owner of Sagacious, was injured in a car accident in Florida earlier this month and could not travel but he sent an email to dressage-news.com: “I am just so proud of the pair. That kür was pretty damned good considering it is the first real CDI Grand Prix she has ever done. Nice start!”
