Matthias Alexander Rath said he is recovering from mononucleosis that kept him from competing Totilas at the London Olympics last month and was reported Thursday to have set the World Cup series beginnng next month as the next goal and sees the in Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016 as a possibility although the black stallion will be 16 years old.
“I want to ride the indoor World Cup season, which starts in the fall,” he told the newspaper Die Welt (The World). “But it is still not clear where we will start.”
The World Cup West European League of eight events starts next month in Odense, Denmark, and ends with the Final in Goteborg, Sweden at the end of April. When ridden by Edward Gal of the Netherlands, Totilas won the World Cup in 2010, the same year the partnership swept the World Equestrian Games gold medals before being sold to Germany at the end of that year.
Asked about the Rio Olympics, Die Welt quoted Matthias: “My plan is to go to Rio with Totilas. There was also this year at the Olympics a few horses that were at 15, 16 or 17 years now and gave very good performances. That we want to create.”
