MYAKKA CITY, Florida, May 4, 2024–Adrienne Lyle on Lars van de Hoenderheide won the TerraNova CDI3* Grand Prix Special and Endel Ots on Zen Elite’s Bohemian captured the Freestyle Saturday to complete qualifying of a squad of eight riders to go to Europe for selection of the United States team for the Paris Olympics.

The success of new this year rider and horse combinations–including the winners Saturday–has breathed life into the top level of American dressage after the retirement of horses that had earned silver medals at the Tokyo Olympics and the 2018 World Equestrian Games at Tryon.

“A big sigh of relief, for sure,” Adrienne said after the ride on Lars. “This heat definitely took a little bit out of him today. I’m sure he’s probably never shown in heat like this in his life.  There were still some good highlights in there, I thought, so I’m really happy.”

Endel said of Bohemian he was “very happy”with the horse’s first victory since he began competing Bohemian at the end of March.

“He tried really hard in there and each ride I’m getting to know him better and better. In the two, three months now, he’s changed so much for me in the show ring and it’s come each time I find a small little different piece and so I feel him really thrive for me now in that ring where I can press on, add a little bit of energy. We still keep the warm-up short, but he has so much gas to go and do everything. I find he’s changing each time I go in the ring and each time I do stuff, trying to adjust to him, that’s something I have to focus on.”

Eleven of the top 13 prospects for the European squad are based in Florida while two are in California–Steffen Peters on Suppenkasper that was on the Tokyo and Tryon teams is ranked No. 1 while Anna Buffini on Fiontini did not compete this weekend as they had already fulfilled qualifying requirements.

The leading combinations by results from which the European squad will be selected are: Steffen on Suppenkasper; Adrienne on Lars van de Hoenderheide and Helix; Endel on Bohemian, Anna on Fiontini; Anna Marek on Fire Fly; Katherine Bateson-Chandler on Haute Couture; Sarah Tubman on First Apple; Marcus Orlob on Jane; Jan Ebeling on Jubi’s Tenacitry; Ashley Holzer on Hansel; Kevin Kohmann on Duenensee, and Kasey Perry-Glass on Heartbeat W.P.

The U.S. Equestrian Federation is expected to decide next Tuesday on the squad of up to eight riders that will go to Europe in about two weeks–with factors that are not dependent on the rankings .

They will possibly compete head-to-head for the first time at a CDI3* at Hagen, Germany June 6-9.

The U.S. Olympic Committee requires team members–up to six combinations–to be decided June 24, the day after the Rotterdam CDIO5* to which the U.S. has been invited, and followed by the World Equestrian Festival in Aachen, Germany July 1-7.

Olympic dressage starts in Paris July 27.
