Two horses were confirmed positive for Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington. Both horses were moved to a veterinary clinic–one horse receiving medical care and is stable, the other was euthanized due to severe clinical signs.

The US Equestrian Federation reported Friday that about 80 exposed horses stabled in the same barn as the two positive horses were quarantined and prohibited from competition.

No other horses at the show were considered exposed and the event continued with approval of the USEF.

Dr. Katie Flynn, USEF Equine Health and Biosecurity Veterinarian, communicated with all parties involved.

“I applaud the VHC (Virginia Horse Center) staff, the show veterinarians, competition management, and show participants for their prompt response and collaborative efforts to immediately implement biosecurity measures to protect the health of all equines on the premises,” she said.
