ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, June 23, 2018–The Netherlands captured the Nations Cup with Sweden second and USA third, after Edward Gal on Glock’s Zonik won the Grand Prix Freestyle in a complicated new format implemented after the Americans won this event in 2017.
Rotterdam was the fourth of seven Nations Cup competitions spanning the Atlantic and and the home team led from the first round of the Grand Prix. Sweden tied it up after the Grand Prix Special but Edward Gal put the Netherlands on the medals podium.
Sweden maintained the lead they built in the two previous Nations Cup events in Uggerhalne, Denmark and Compiègne, France.
For the United States, it was the first of three European shows–Leudelange, Luxembourg and Aaachen, Germany are the other two next month–in which eight combinations on the Elite list are vying to go to the World Equestrian Games in Tryon, North Carolina in September. (see separate story)
The format and organization of the event was confusing to most spectators, the media and even many officials. The organizers admitted at the final news conference it was impossible follow the placings of the seven counyries participating here until the final outcome–and the Grand Prix Special and Freestyle were split into different groups and competed in different arernas.
Final standings of Rotterdam were 1. Netherlands 20; 2. Sweden 21; 3. USA 30; 4. Germany 65; 5. France 69; 6. Great Britain 89; 7. Belgium 93. The results kept Sweden, the defending titleholder, at the top of the series with 40 points, Netherlands 2nd on 35, Denmark 3rd on 23, USA 4th on 21 and Great Britain 5th on 15.
