BALVE, Germany, June 8, 2018–Sönke Rothenberger and Cosmo beat his Olympic and European Championship team mate Isabell Werth and Weihegold OLD for the first time by winning the German Championship Grand Prix Friday.
Sönke and the 11-year-old KWPN gelding were awarded 82.820 per cent, just 0.100 per cent higher than the score of 82.720 per cent for Isabell and Weihegold from the all-German ground jury in the national level Grand Prix. The result was the first Grand Prix result above 80 per cent for the 23-year-old rider and Cosmo.
Jessica von Bredow-Werndl on TSF Dalera placed third on 78.360 per cent and Dorothee Schneider on Sammy Davis Jr. fourth on 77.620 per cent.
The championships for separate medals for the Grand Prix Special and the Freestyle will decide the team for the World Equestrian Festival in Aachen,Germany next month after which the team will be selected for the World Equestrian Games in Tryon, North Carolina in September.
The starting lineup depleted by injuries to Kristina Bröring-Sprehe’s Desperados FRH, Dorothee Schneider’s Showtime FRH and Emilio, one of three mounts entered by Isabell Werth and the 2017 champion.
This was only the second competition for Sönke and Cosmo since the European Championships last August where the pair placed second behind Isabell and the 13-year-old Oldenburg mare in all Grand Prix classes, but also became one of only five combinations in history to score above 90 per cent for the musical performance. The pair competed at the Hagen Horses & Dreams CDI4* in April.
Isabell and Weihegold successfully defended their World Cup title in April.
