AMSTERDAM, Jan. 27, 2018–Isabell Werth and Weihegold OLD dominated the World Cup Grand Prix with a victory in the Freestyle on the German pair’s road to Pairs to defend the championship title.
Isabell and the 13-year-old Oldenburg mare were awarded 88.540 per cent for the eighth straight win for the Olympic team gold medal combination, beginning with the freestyle at the Aachen, Germany World Equestrian Festival last July. The pair had an easy win in the Grand Prix Friday.
“Weihe was really fantastic today,” Isabell said after the ride. “I can’t describe the feeling of this power and collection, she’s like a metronome–we can do whatever we want. The atmosphere in the arena was electric so I had to be careful because she was very hot. She produced really magnificent piaffe/passage, but I stopped breathing in the collected walk because she was SO ready for the canter.”
Hometown favorite Edward Gal on Glock’s Zonik was the runner-up on a personal best 81.860 per cent in only the third freestyle for the Dutch pair.
Germany’s Jessica von Bredow-Werndl on the 17-year-old stallion Unee BB was third on 81.195 per cent. Jessica gave birth to her first child last summer, and skipped the Omaha World Cup Final. The duo won bronze medals at the 2015 and 2016 finals.
Patrik Kittel, who finished fourth on 81.155 per cent, remained atop the Western European League World Cup standings with 74 points, while Jessica von Bredow-Werndl moved up to second on 59 points. Dorothee Schneider of Germany who did not compete here in third on 55 points and Sweden’s seven-time Olympian Tinne Vilhelmson Silfvén who is competing in Florida is in fourth place with 53.5 points.
Three more Western European events remain before the final in Paris April 10-15 where Isabell will be looking to claim her fourth World Cup title. Her first was a quarter century ago.
The victory by Isabell and Weihegold came 12 hours after America’s Laura Graves and Verdades won their first World Cup qualifier with the highest ever score of 84.657 per cent at the Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida.
The two could meet again in Paris for a showdown after the 2017 final won by Isabell and Weihegold with Laura and Verdades reserve champion. The American became the only rider to beat Isabell since the 2016 Olympics when they won the Grand Prix Special at Aachen last July.
