OMAHA, Nebraska, Mar. 30, 2017–Isabell Werth and her Oympic team gold medal mount Weihegold OLD won the World Cup Grand Prix Thursday in the German rider’s quest for a third title. The pair scored 82.300 per cent.
Laura Graves of the United States on her Olympic bronze medal horse Verdades was second on 79.800 per cent.
“I came here to win,” said Laura of Geneva, Florida, “but coming second to Isabell feels a lot like winning.”
Carl Hester of Great Britain on Nip Tuck, his Olympic team silver medal horse, placed third on 76.671 per cent.
The Grand Prix Freestyle to decide the World Cup is scheduled for Saturday but this event has already won plaudits for the competitive dressage lineup and some of the best facilities ever provided for the annual championship.
Isabell said that Weihegold, 12-year-old Oldenburg mare on which she is ranked No. 1 in the world, was in “super shape” after the flight from Europe to Omaha last Saturday.
“Here everything was really perfect,” said the 47-year-old mother who has won 10 Olympic medals, more than any other equestrian. “The facilities are great, nothing short in the venue. The horses, grooms and riders have found it really perfect.”
The warm up was good, but Weihegold was a “little tense coming into the arena” as the last of 16 horses as the crowd loudly applauded Laura Graves and Verdades who rode before her.
She started a little cautiously. She blamed a mistake in the two-tempi changes on herself as she “forgot to stay concentrated–stupid!”
Laura Graves said she had not competed her 15-year-old KWPN gelding indoors since her first World Cup Final in Las Vegas in 2015.
However, she did not change anything.
Asked whether she thought she could win on Saturday, Laura replied:
Anything is possible.”
Wendi Williamson and Dejavu MH the first combination from New Zealand in the 32-year history of the dressage World Cup was eliminated after the ride when blood was found in the horse’s mouth in the equipment check leaving the arena.
“It’s a real shame as the horse and rider had come such a long way to compete here,” said Katrina Wüst of Germany, president of the ground jury, “but the rule is in place to protect horses and there can be no gray areas when it comes to horse welfare.”
