COMPIÈGNE, France, May 20, 2016–Juan Matute, Jr. claimed victory in his first competition in Europe this year when the 18-year-old Florida-based rider and Dhannie Ymas won the CDI Young Rider team test Friday. A trio of American Young Riders also in their first competition in Europe this year placed between 19th and 27th in the field of 32 starting combinations.
Juan,who rides for Spain and is ranked No. 3 Young Rider in the world on the nine-year-old Hanoverian gelding scored 74.298 per cent for the win. The score was a personal best for the pair in the Young Rider team test.
Jeanine Nekeman on Vlingh and Thalia Rockx on Verdi de la Fazenda, both of the Netherlands, placed second on 71.842 per cent and 70.351 per cent, respectively.
Lauren Asher of San Diego, California on De Noir was 19th on 67.061 per cent, Barbara “Bebe” Davis of Wellington on Feivel Mousekewitz was 23rd on 65.614 per cent and Kerrigan Gluch also based in Wellington was 27th on Vaquero HGF with 65.000 per cent.
Juan and Dhannie won European Junior Championship Freestyle gold in 2015 and in 15 starts on the Adequan Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida over the winter posted 12 victories, including individual Freestyle gold on Dhannie at Small Tour in the CDIO3* Nations Cup.
He is scheduled to compete Quantico Ymas in the Under-25 division and Don Diego Ymas in the CDIO5* Nations Cup.
The family of three-time Spanish Olympian Juan Matute has been based in Wellington for the past decade.
