PERL-BORG, Germany, Sept. 13, 2015–Isabell Werth’s newest star Emilio completed her international Big Tour debut by winning the Peterhof Dressur Gala CDI4* Grand Prix Special Sunday, a double victory for the five-time German Olympian and the nine-year-old gelding.
Isabell and the Westfalen gelding (Ehrenpreis x Cacir) that she has been preparing for an international Big Tour career the past four years scored 76.745 per cent, two days after the pair’s CDI Grand Prix debut with a victory on a score of 75.440 per cent.
Hubertus Schmidt, a German team mate of Isabell, rode Imperio to second place with 75.412 per cent.
Great Britain’s Spencer Wilton posted a personal best score of 74.235 per cent on Super Nova II for third place. The previous best for Spencer and the 12-year-old British-bred gelding was 73.137 per cent set in Germany two months ago.
Isabell dominated the Peterhof Grand Prix with two wins on Emilio and two on Don Johnson FRH, her mount at the European Championships last month.
Isabell and Emilio performed their first Grand Prix at a national show recently before attempting the CDI Big Tour here.
“With him,” Isabell said, “everything is so simple, so clear and already absolutely reliable.”
Of the piaffe-passage tour, a centerpiece of the Grand Prix, she said: “Whether you want to do 15 or 20 piaffe steps with him–it does not matter to him.”
Emilio joins a lineup of Grand Prix horses competed by Isabell that includes Don Johnson, ranked No. 5 in the world, El Santo NRW ranked No. 21, Bella Rose, the 11-year-old mare on which she placed second individually in the World Games team competition a year ago, and Laurenti. All are owned fully or in part by longtime sponsor Madeleine Winter-Schulze.
Correction: An earlier version incorrectly identified Emilio as a mare. He is a gelding.
