AACHEN, Germany, July 16–Totilas ridden by Matthias Alexander Rath won the CDIO Grand Prix Special Saturday with the highest score so far for the partnership with a display of harmony and power that gave the pair the only score above 80 per cent in what amounts to a world championship.

The pair’s score of 83.083 per cent eclipsed the 79.771 per cent for the Dutch partnership of Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival, the only combination to ever beat team mate Edward Gal at Grand Prix level in his career as the rider of the 11-year-old black stallion by Gribaldi, which she did twice.

Not all the judges agreed on the placings although they all awarded the winning pair points above 80 per cent, with Wojtek Markowski of Poland preferring Adelinde.

Uncharacteristic mistakes by Laura Bechtolsheimer on her top horse, Mistral Hojris–breaking into a canter in the extended trot and then going off course but offset by five 10s in piaffe and passage –put her in fourth place on 77.229 per cent, behind German star Isabell Werth on El Santo NRW with 77.292 per cent. The USA’s Steffen Peters on Ravel was fifth with a score of 76.708 per cent.

As with most appearances by Totilas, the 5,000-seat Deutsche Bank Stadium was standing room only and has been sold out for all the dressage competitions this year for the first time. Frank Kemperman, chairman of the show organization, said that tickets are selling fast for dressage in 2012.

Matthias, who is just 26, admitted he was far more relaxed in the Grand Prix Special than in Thursday Nations Cup Grand Prix in which he was riding for his German team. The pair who began the partnership at the start of the year after the horse was bought by Paul Schockemöhle and Ann-Kathrin Linsenhoff, Matthias’s stepmother, also received five marks of 10 with the primary weakness being the extended trot.

“In the Grand Prix Special I could ride Totilas who gives me a wonderful feeling,” he said in phrases that echoed those of Edward when he rode the horse to world record scores at all three Grand Prix levels. “There was a difference in that there was pressure to do well for my team in the Grand Prix.”

Asked about riding Totilas, he said: “Everyone knows that Totilas was very well schooled by Edward Gal, but Totilas could not do a test on his own so it was a win for the two of us.”

Adelinde said she followed with her promise to “go for it” after Thursday’s disappointing performance and to “ride every step.”

“I went for it,” she said, and was surprised at the score because she said she had ridden as well in other competitions and scored higher.

Laura Bechtolsheimer said later, “I feel so stupid. I think I was just trying too hard. S–t happens. That about sums it up.”
