LAUSANNE, Switzerland, Sept. 17–International Equestrian Federation President Princess Haya has been appointed the World Organization for Animal Health’s first Goodwill Ambassador to help raise global awareness of its missions and activities.

Dr Bernard Vallat, director general of the organization known by the initials OIE, said:”I know she will make a persuasive advocate for our goal of promoting animal health and welfare worldwide.”

The princess said the OIE’s role in “establishing the standards and approach taken to improve animal health globally is crucial, and especially at a time when the world faces the challenges of climate change, globalization and an ever-growing population to feed.”

A former Olympic jumper rider, Princess Haya is a member of the International Olympic Committee and President of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI).

The OIE and FEI signed a cooperation agreement 10 years ago and at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 2011 jointly sponsored a conference on modernizing international movement of horses in South America. As a result, the two orgsnizations are seeking new protocols for the movement of “high health, high performance” sport horses.
