SALZBURG, Austria, Dec. 7, 2019–Isabell Werth and Emilio won the World Cup Grand Prix Saturday on the champion rider’s campaign to qualify two horses for the Final in Las Vegas in April.
Isabell, champion of the last three finals of the annual world championship, rode Emilio to a score of 78.957%. When the German rider completes the Freestyle Sunday Emilio, a 13-year-old Westfalen gelding on which Isabell is ranked No. 9 in the world, will have fulfilled the requirement of two events for the titleholder to go to the Final.
Isabell, as she did for the 2019 Final, is qualifying Emilio as backup to Weihegold OLD, the Olympic team gold medal mount on which she has won three straight World Cup titles. She rode Emilio at the World Cup event in Stuttgart, Germany a month ago.
Germany’s Benjamin Werndl on Daily Mirror posted a personal best score of 77.717% as runnerup in his campaign for a second World Cup Final. Benjamin and the 15-year-old Westfalen gelding, competed in their first Final, at Gothenburg, Sweden last April.
Morgan Barbançon of France on Sir Donnerhall II, partnered at the last two World Cup Finals, was third on 72.304%, also a personal best score.
