BALVE, Germany, June 9, 2018–Sönke Rothenberger and Cosmo performed a brilliant Grand Prix Special Saturday to claim their first senior German Championship gold medal with Isabell Werth and Weihegold OLD reserve champion.
The Olympic and European Championship team gold medal partnership of Sönke and the 11-year-old KWPN gelding were awarded 83.706 per cent, the highest score for the pair for the second day in a row.
The ride was trending in the high 80s–above the world record of 87.460 per cent set by Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro in 2014–but a mistake penalized the pair by two points from each of the five judges on the all-German ground jury at the national competition.
The pair received 14 marks of 10 in the ride. The highest Big Tour Grand Prix Special score for the 23-year-old rider and Cosmo is 82.479 per cent, posted at the European Championships last August.
Sönke took silver in 2017, behind Isabell and Emilio. The pair also won gold as a Young Rider in 2014.
Isabell Werth and Weihegold, a 13-year-old Oldenburg mare, placed second on 82.804 per cent. Isabell claimed both the Grand Prix Special and Freestyle championships on Emilio in 2017.
Dorothee Schneider on Sammy Davis Jr. was third on 76.804 per cent.
Sönke credits a break of eight months after the 2017 Europeans as helping to move the pair to a new level of performance.
The German team for the World Equestrian Festival Nations Cup at Aachen, Germany next month is largely decided by these championships that in turn will lead to naming the team for the World Equestrian Games in Tryon, North Carolina in September.
The Grand Prix Freestyle is scheduled for Sunday and will be streamed live by clipmyhorse.tv.
