MECHELEN, Belgium, Dec. 28, 2016–Tommie Visser of the Netherlands and Variohippique’s Vingino posted a career high score to capture the CDI4* Grand Prix Freestyle Wednesday at the final international dressage show of 2016.
Tommie and the KWPN gelding that he has been competing at Big Tour since 2012 were awarded 78.000 per cent to eke out a win by a split decision over the 22-year-old Jorinde Verwimp and her Olympic mount Tiamo that also posted a career high score, 77.900 per cent.
The victory for Tommie and the 14-year-old Vingino–three judges placed the pair first and two gave the Belgian pair the top award–was their second in just five starts this year.
The result for Jorinde and the KWPN gelding that she has competed from juniors through to the Olympics came a day after winning the Grand Prix.
Jorinde and Tiamo, now 16 years old, competed in the 2011 and 2012 European Championships as juniors, then moved to young riders to lead her team to European Championship bronze in 2013 and took the Freestyle bronze at the 2014 Europeans for young riders. The pair scored 77.900 per cent in a young rider team test in France in 2013.
The duo were top finishing for Belgium at the senior European Championships in 2015.
Jorinde and Tiamo (Lester x Hemmingway) were Belgium’s sole combination at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro this summer.
The Dutch combination of Patrick van der Meer and Zippo placed third on 76.300 per cent.
