Great Britain’s Fiona Bigwood on Orthilia were third on 75.780 per cent.
Günter Seidel of Cardiff, California on Zero Gravity, one of the nine combinations on the American squad in Europe, placed eighth on 70.640 per cent.
“Leogolas did a very clean test with lots of nines for piaffe and passage,” Steffen told dressage-news.com. “A great start for the European tour.
“As soon as I started to walk and cool out Legolas after his test I focused on the Grand Prix Special which will be a hge challenge for both Legolas and I tomorrow.”
Laura Graves said: “Diddy was super today. We had an unfortunate draw. But I made a mistake in the zigzag and Diddy anticipated our final halt.
“He was very relaxed and I think probably our highest scores for piaffe and passage.
“We are looking forward to the Special tomorrow which we were unable to complete in Compiègne.” The Grand Prix Special at the Nations Cup was washed out by heavy rain.
Steffen and Rosamunde are scheduled to start Saturday in the Grand Prix to qualify for the Freestyle.
Steffen and his two mounts and Laura on Verdades are America’s three highest ranked riders.
Kasey Perry-Glass of Wellington, Florida on Dublet have been the highest scoring U.S. combination on the European tour so far with 77.440 per cent in the Nations Cup in France two weeks ago.
Another three American combinations also competed in France–Allison Brock on Rosevelt, Arlene “Tuny” Page on Woodstock and Shelly Francis on both Doktor and Danilo.
The Roosendaal CDI4* will be followed later this month by the Nations Cup and a CDI3* at Rotterdam at which all seven American riders and nine horses will compete to determine the team of four combinations and reserves to go to Rio.
