Chris von Martels has been named Equine Canada Athlete of the year for his team silver and individual bronze medal performances on Zilverstar at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto.

Chris, 33 years old and based in Wellington, Florida, was competing Divertimento at the inaugural Tryon, North Carolina CDI3* when the award was announced Friday night.

Chris and the 12-year-old KWPN gelding rode at Small Tour on Canada’s team at last summer’s Pan Ams that won silver and then took individual bronze for their performance in the Intermediate Freestyle.

“I am truly so appreciative to so many people,” Chris said, “but mostly grateful to Zilverstar.”

Chris on Divertimento is seeking to qualify for one of Canada’s two individual starting places at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in August.
