AMSTERDAM, Jan. 39, 2016–German superstar Isabell Werth rode Weihegold OLD in the first musical performance for the 11-year-old mare to capture the World Cup Grand Prix Saturday with European Championship team mates Jessica von Bredow-Werndl on Unee BB runner-up.

The ride by Isabell on the Oldenburg mare that has been competed successfully by her assistant, Beatric Buchwald, earned the pair 83.450 per cent. All the more remarkable was that this was also the horse’s first World Cup event and the last time Isabell showed Weihegold in a CDI was more than a year ago when she launched the horse’s Big Tour career at Oldenburg, Germany.

Jessica and Unee BB, a 15-year-old KWPN stallion that she won the bronze medal at the 2015 World Cup Final in Las Vegas, posted a personal best score of 83.250 per cent.

Diederik van Silfhout on his European Championship team gold medal mount of Arlando was the top finishing home rider to place third on 82.750 per cent.

Isabell and Weihegold were outstanding in a starting lineup of 15 combinations in which six pairs scored above 80 per cent–Great Britain’s Charlotte Dujardin on Uthopia in fourth on 82.375 per cent, Hans Peter Minderhoud on Glock’s Flirt fifth on 82.250 per cent and Edward Gal and Glock’s Voice, winners of the Grand Prix on Friday, in sixth place on 82.100 per cent.

“It was a surprise because the Freestyle is really difficult here in this atmosphere in Amsterdam, and there was an outstanding field of competitors,” said the 46-year-old German rider who includes six Olympic gold medals and two World Cup titles on her resume.

“You know how it is in Freestyle, we did not have the best starting order so I was not expecting to win, but at the end of our test I felt really sure and safe. I’m so very, very happy!”

Dutch judge Eduard de Wolff van Westerrode gave Isabell and Weihegold the lowest scores, 78.50 for technical and 80.00 per cent for artistic, while Francis Verbeek-van Rooy of the Netherlands and Stephen Clarke of Great Britain both awarded the pair 90.00 per cent for artistic.

Isabell indicated the ride on Weihegold would be shared with Beatrice Buchwald who had won both the German Prix St. Georges championship for seven to nine-year-old horses and the country’s developing Grand Prix title.

“She is a clear option for the German team and the Olympics now,” she said. “I ride her to give her my experience, but Bea will continue to ride her as well and we will try all options to find the strongest combination for Rio. I’m really happy to have such a strong team of horses.”

She talked about the arrangement between the mare’s owners and her long-time patron, Madeleine Winter-Schulze. “They have found a solution together with Madeleine to keep the horse for me to ride. There have been many offers to buy her, but in the end there is a good solution between the owners and Madeleine who is always very happy to help–it’s all about team-work. With Madeleine I am very close–she is always at our side, and at my side.”

Isabell’s Grand Prix lineup includes Don Johnson FRH that she ranked No. 3 in the world, El Santo NRW, the developing Emilio and Laurenti as well as the spectacular Bella Rose that she has not competed for more than a year because of an injury but told dressage-news recently that she expects to return to the show ring in the spring.

This was the seventh of nine Western European League qualifiers for the World Cup Final in Gothenburg, Sweden in late March.

After today’s competition with two more WEL World Cup events on the calendar Patrik Kittel of Sweden is atop the league standings with 65 points, followed by Jessica von Bredow-Werndl on 64, Hans Peter Minderhoud on 61 and Isabell Werth fourth in the rankings on 57 points.
