LEXINGTON, Kentucky, Nov. 12, 2015–All horses entering the grounds of U.S. Equestrian Federation-licensed competitions will be required to have documentation of Equine Influenza Virus and Equine Herpes Virus (Rhinopneumonitis) vaccinations within the previous six months, effective Dec. 1.
The USEF issued a reminder of the rule approved last January to deal with several high profile equine herpes (EHV) outbreaks in recent years that have involved the neuropathic strain of the virus.
Some competitions, it said, have implemented vaccination requirements that go beyond most accepted medical opinions and raise concern that the unnecessary requirements can potentially put a horse at risk.
