SYDNEY, Oct 25–I arrived into Sydney from Miami, Florida at 8 a.m. after about 16 hours of travel, jumped into my rental car, reminded myself to stay on the left side of the road and headed west, to the Sydney International Equestrian Centre, location for the Olympic equestrian events in 2000, to attend the CDI-W that was being held in conjunction with the Saddleworld Australian Dressage Championships. This is a massive and beautiful facility with at least eight competition arenas, some oversized warm up areas and an indoor arena that is quite Australian in character.

The CDI-W promised to be of wide interest as it was to be the first CDI in 2013 for the Olympic duo of Mary Hanna and the 12-year-old gelding Sancette (Sandro Hit) and also for the  combination of Maree Tomkinson and her extraordinary 11-year-old mare Diamantina IV (Diamond Hit). The importance of this event in the new selection protocol heading toward Normandy, 2014 also guaranteed that everyone hoping to make the team would show up and compete. And they did, with 21 entries for the CDI Grand Prix.

Maree Tomkinson and Diamantina IV were the eventual winners of the class (67.957 per cent), but it was a close finish with the top three placing within one percent of each other. Sheridyn Ashwood and her KWPN stallion Prestige VDL (Silvano N) finished second with 67.766 per cent and Rozzie Ryan and the ex-eventer GV Bullwinkle (Rocadero) third with 67.362.

Diamantina is a simply beautiful mare with the highlights being her extravagant changes, good pirouettes and passage. These combined with a clean test were enough to keep her ahead of Prestige VDL, who showed maybe the best piaffe/passage tour, really sitting in the piaffe, but made some small but expensive mistakes.

Anjanette Harten from Queensland and her gelding UQG Alladin (Anamour) surprised many with their fourth placing (66.809), they were consistent and correct throughout and she has the most delightful end-of test celebration move. I guess Alladin loves his ears being rubbed!

Never fear, UQG Alladin is actually a very handsome boy when Anjanette moves her hugs to the more traditional neck!

Although I would love to continue with the delights of being back in Australia, the great sales at the trade stand area and the wonderful food, jet lag has thoroughly taken over!
