ODENSE, Denmark, Oct. 19–Anna Kasprzak and Donnperignon gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about Saturday when the Danish Olympic partnership won the Grand Prix with a personal best score to open the Western European League World Cup season of eight events leading to the Final in Lyon, France next April.
Anna and the 14-year-old Finnish Warmblood gelding (Donnerhall x Mozart) whose last competition was on the Danish team in the European Championships at nearby Herning two months ago, scored 76.979 per cent that surpassed their previous highest result in the Grand Prix of 76.426 per cent at Stockholm last December.
Anna is 23 years old and with Donnperignon the highest ranked Danish combination at No. 8 in the world.
Germany’s Isbabell Werth on Don Johnson FRH placed second on 73.872 per cent while Tinne Vilhelmsson-Silfvén of Sweden and Don Auriello were third on 73.511 per cent.
It´s the best Grand Prix I have ridden so far and I´m so happy with Donnperignon,” Anna said. “Although I had a good feeling in the warm-up, he felt very fresh–almost a little bit too much, but he did so well in the arena. I´m extremely satisfied with the result and I hope I can continue like this tomorrow.”
Iabell was happy with most of her ride except “I had some stupid mistakes in the zig-zags.
“I expected 75 per cent today, so I am determined to do better tomorrow and will definitely go for the victory.“
Lisa Wilcox of the United States rode Denzello in not only the horse’s CDI debut for a score of 66.046 per cent and 12th place, but the first CDI that the Wellington, Florida-based rider has shown in Europe since this same event on Naomi in 2007 (see separate story).
Edward Gal and Glock’s Voice scratched from the Grand Prix while Australia’s Jessica Greelish was eliminated when the 10-year-old Lancaster showed blood on his mouth, apparently from biting his tongue. Jessica and Lancaster began competing at CDIs in Europe five months ago and this was their debut in a Western European League qualifier.
World Cup points are awarded for the Grand Prix Freestyle that is scheduled for Sunday.
