MANNHEIM, Germany, May 4–Akeem ridden by Andreas Helgstrand won the Grand Prix Special at Maimarkt-Turnier CDI3* Saturday, but Thomas Sigtenbjerggaard and Nintendo almost stole the show in the international debut for the fellow Danish combination. Germany’s Jenny Lang and Loverboy won the Freestyle on Sunday.
Andreas and the 11-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding (Akinos x Lobelia Foldager x Loran) scored 73.229 per cent, the fourth start at two shows in the past two weeks and barely a month since being acquired by Andreas and two partners. The pair have now become the top candidates to make the Danish team for the European Championships in Denmark in August.
However, Thomas Sigtenbjerggaard and Nintendo, making their international debut at this competition, were close behind in the runnerup spot with 72.708 per cent and Wolfram Wittig of Germany and his Bertoli W third on 70.604 per cent.
Akeem was the winner of the Grand Prix Friday, with Nintendo in fifth place on 68.638 per cent.
Andreas and Akeem were placed first by three of the five judges with scores ranging from a high of 75.521 from Freddy Leyman of Belgium to a low of 69.375 from Gotthilf Riexinger of Germany, who had the pair fourth. They received a pair of 10s for piaffe on the final centerline.
Thomas and Nintendo, however, were placed first by Anne Gribbons of the United States and Gotthilf Riexinger with the rest placing them second, but all judges awarding the pair marks above 70 per cent.
Nintendo is a 10-year-old KWPN gelding (Negro x Rodieni R x Monaco), owned by Hanni Kasprzak, one of the three partners in the Akeem ownershp group and the mother of Anna Kasprzak who rode Donnperignon on the Danish team at last summer’s Olympics in London.
Thomas and Nintendo won Denmark’s Jutland Championships Open title two weeks ago with high marks for piaffe and passage.
Jenny Lang and Loverboy, a 13-year-old Holsteiner gelding (Lorentin I x Eira I x Alcatraz), scored 75.550 per cent to win the Freestyle on Sunday in only their second show since starting at CDI Grand Prix a month ago. Finland’s Terhi Stegars on Axis TSF was second on 71.850 per cent and Sweden’s Jeanna Hogberg on Liza Minelli third on 70.600 per cent.
