LOXAHATCHEE, Florida, Mar. 3–Lars Petersen and Mariett continued a succession of personal best scores in winning the Palm Beach Dressage Derby World Cup Freestyle Sunday, but the battle to make the World Cup Final tightened with one more qualifying competition remaining in the North American League.

Lars, a Danish Olympian who is based in Florida, scored 76.400 per cent on the 15-year-old Danish Warmblood mare (Come Back II x Zendi x Sidney) owned by Marcia Pepper. The previous best Freestyle result for the partnership that has been competing at Grand Prix for only a year was 73.925 per cent set at the Palm Beach CDI5* a month ago.

The pair won the Grand Prix on Friday, also with a personal best.

Shelly Francis of the United States and Doktor, also based in Florida, were second on 73.625 per cent while Mikala Gundersen, also Danish and based in Wellington, Florda, were third on 72.775 per cent.

The Palm Beach event was the seventh of eight World Cup events in the North American League and the results did not change the top two places in the standings.

Canadians David Marcus, Jacqueline Brooks and Jaimey Irwin have the highest average of the best two results (see below) for the two places awarded to North America for the Final to be held in Gothenborg, Sweden at the end of April.

Shelly Francis and her rapidly improving Doktor are hot on their heels, hwoever. Shelly and the 10-year-old Oldenburg gelding (Diamond Hit x Gurena x Renoir 1) were making only their sixth start since beginning Grand Prix this year.

U.S. Olympians Tina Konyot and Calecto V and Adrienne Lyle and Wizard each have one score that are higher than any in the combinations that have two results and could be in line for an invitation if either combination competes at the eighth and final qualifier at West Palm Beach Mar. 21-24.

The recovery by Mariett from a serious stall accident has been miraculous.

Mariett tore off a foot up to the coronet band and it took two years for the hoof to grow back. Despite fears she might not be able to compete again, the mare healed sufficiently that Marcia turned Mariett over to Lars to train and compete.

Since starting their CDI Grand Prix career exactly a year ago, the partnership has produced consistently improving results and the two victories at this year’s 30th anniversary Palm Beach Dressage Derby made it four wins in a row.

“She is getting better and better,” Lars said.

But he wants to wait until the end of the winter circuit in another month before making plans for the rest of the year.
