BURBANK, California, Feb. 25–Steffen Peters rode Weltino’s Magic to their first Pan American Games qualifier victory Friday at the Mid-Winter Dressage Fair CDI1*.
Of the starting lineup of 15 riders from the USA, Canada and Germany, Steffen of San Diego and the nine-year-old Westfalen gelding owned by Jen Hlavacek placed first on a score of 76.272 per cent. Marisa Festerling of Moorpark on Big Tyme was second on 72.719 per cent and Rebecca Rigdon of San Diego on Solei in third on 69.298 per cent.
Riders are seeking to qualify for the U.S. selection trials later this year for the Pan Ams, held once every four years at small tour and scheduled for Guadalajara, Mexico, in October.
Steffen also competed Ravel for the first time since winning two individual bronze medals at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky last year. In the national Grand Prix, the pair scored 75.532 per cent with Kathleen Raine of Murrieta on Breanna in second place on 65.957 per cent and her husband, David Wightman, on Partous in third place on 64.043 per cent.
