ODENSE, Denmark, Oct. 24–Isabell Werth and Satchmo, the German team Olympic gold medalists, turned the tables on local favorite Nathalie zu Sayn-Wittgenstein and Digby on Sunday to capture the first West European League World Cup qualifier for the 2010/2011 worldwide series.

The Grand Prix Freestyle score for Isabell and the 16-year-old gelding of 81.100 per cent was their highest since May of 2009 at the Exquis World Dressage Masters in Munich. Four of the five judges placed them first, with Denmark’s Kurt Christensen giving the nod to Nathalie and Digby whose score of 80.050 per cent was their highest ever. Holland’s Hans Peter Minderhoud and IPS Tango placed third on 77.200 per cent.

The riders of the top two placings are mothers of young children. Isabell gave birth to her first child, a boy, almost exactly a year ago while Nathalie became a mother for the first time in July.

In the Grand Prix on Saturday, Nathalie and Digby finished first with Isabell and Satchmo second and Hans Peter and Tango third.

“Today Satchmo had the right mixture of power and relaxation, just the way I love it!” said Isabell who won the World Cup with Warum Nicht FRH in Las Vegas in 2007.

Nathalie said she knew it would be hard to beat Isabell in the freestyle. She gave it her best try and came pretty close.

The crowd’s applause for the Danish combination affected Tango at the start of the ride, but Hans Peter said the horse was working “really good” in the second half.

However, Hans Peter was happy with his weekend in Odense as he also won the Intermediaire I Freestyle showing stallion Johnson.

“I am very happy and proud as I’m already training and educating both approved stallions Johnson and IPS Tango since they were three years old. Now it’s wonderful to become aware of the appreciation of the judges in sport! Both stallions have to build up show experiences now and Odense was a great start of the new season to do so. I’m looking forward to compete IPS Tango in the third qualifier in Stockholm again.”

The World Cup has begun its second quarter-century with the 2010/2011 season and has a new sponsor for the next three years, fashion designer Reem Acra, who puts her name on both the Western European League and the Final in Leipzig, Germany at the end of April.

Missing from this year’s indoor circuit, the only annual worldwide dressage series, is the defending World Cup championship pair of Edward Gal and Moorlands Totilas as the spectacular 10-year-old stallion has been sold to Germany’s Paul Schockemöhle of Performance Sales International. The pair also collected all three gold medals up for grabs at the recent WEG in Kentucky.

The Western European League is the most competitive of the four leagues, the others being Central Europe, North America and Asia/Pacific.

Among the likely contenders to be in Leipzig for the Final April 27-May 1 are WEG triple silver medalist Laura Bechtolsheimer and Mistral Hojris of Great Britain as well as the crowd-pleasing Spanish combination of Juan Manuel Munoz Diaz and Fuego XII and the Netherlands’ Adelinde Cornelissen and Jerich Parzival, ranked No. 2 in the world, but dogged by inuuries in their two appearances in the Western Hemisphere, the 2009 World Cup Final in Las Vegas and WEG in Kentucky. The 2009 title holder Steffen Peters and Ravel of the USA is also looking at possibilities to be at Leipzig. In the 2009/2010 season, there were no World Cup qualifiers on the U.S. West Coast where the pair make their home.

After the opening leg in Odense, the West European League is next in Lyon, France; then Stockholm; London; Frankfurt, Germany; Mechelen, Belgium; Amsterdam; Neumunster, Germany; Gothenburg, Sweden, and s’-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.
