WAYNE, Illinois, May 21–The USA’s Joe Sandven on Rachmaninoff followed up his victory in the Lamplight CDI3* Grand Prix Friday by winning the Grand Prix Freestyle Saturday. The Dominican Republic’s Yvonne Losos de Muñiz on Optimus Prime won the Grand Prix Special on Sunday.

Joe Sandven of Fletcher, North Carolina, won the Grand Prix Freestyle with 71-250 per cent, with Canadians Victoria Winter on Proton second with 68.100 per cent and Jacqueline Brooks and Gran Gesto third with 67.300 per cent.

In the Grand Prix, their winning score was 65.064 per cent, with Canada’s Gary Vander Ploeg on Cezanne was second with 64.809 per cent and the Dominican Republic’s Yvonne Losos de Muñiz on Optimus Prime third with 64.766 per cent.

Yvonne and Optimus Prime won the Grand Prix Special  Sunday with a score of 64.417 per cent with Puerto Rico’s Luis Reteguiz-Denizard on Nalando second on 62.083 per cent and Gary Vander Ploeg and Cezanne third on 61.083 per cent.

Yvonne and the 16-year-old Austrian warmblood were probably the happiest rider as she attained the score on Optimus Prime to enable her to compete for the Dominican Republic at the World Equestrian Games later this year.

“This is the best feeling,” Yvonne told dressage-news.com after her score was announced and she said she was going out to celebrate. For WEG, she needed two scores of 64 per cent from an “O” judge, receiving one of 65.319 per cent at the Kentucky test event exactly a month ago, and Friday 64.766 per cent.

“What is really so wonderful is that I got the horse only in January and we have come along that he is now good for us to to go the WEG.”

The ground jury for one of the last opportunities for riders in North America to qualify for WEG included some of the most experienced and respected “O” judges: Stephen Clarke of Great Britain, Wim Earnes of The Netherlands and Gary Rockwell of the U.S.

Among those disappointed with Friday’s results are Canadian Olympian Jacqueline Brooks who scored 63.489 per cent on Gran Gesto and 61.872 per cent on Balmoral and Florida-based Colombian Marco Bernal and Halbgott with 62.851 per cent.

Yvonne, in her hometown of Santo Domingo in 2003, made history by becoming the first equestrian athlete to win a medal for the Dominican Republic at the Pan American Games. Four years later, at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, she repeated her individual bronze medal performance.

Earlier this year she renewed her training partnership with Diederik Wigmans of The Netherlands, who she successfully worked with at the beginning of her international career. He was at Wayne this weekend.
